EIN & Business Setup

Do You Need a US LLC to Use Stripe or PayPal for Your Business?

Explore whether a US LLC fits your Stripe or PayPal plans, why approval is separate, and how a clear business website supports your launch.

Many international founders consider a US LLC because they want reliable online payments. Before choosing a formation service, check which account types and providers support your business, location and intended activities. An LLC should fit the business plan rather than serve as a promise of automatic account approval.

There is no single LLC requirement for every seller

The appropriate setup depends on the provider, country and business structure. A US LLC is not a universal prerequisite for every Stripe or PayPal user. If a US company is part of your plan, confirm the requirements for that specific account instead of applying assumptions from another country.

What does Stripe ask for?

Stripe's guidance for opening an account in another country describes requirements including a legal entity, tax identification, physical address, phone number, government identification, a working website and an appropriate bank account. Check the current country-specific rules and restrictions before forming a company for this purpose.

Your business description should match the real products or services you intend to sell. Preparing consistent information is worthwhile; presenting a fictional office, owner or activity is not an acceptable way to satisfy a requirement.

What does PayPal ask for?

PayPal's US business-account guidance lists owner and business information, tax identification and business bank details. Its review is separate from state formation and EIN issuance. Confirm the applicable country terms and account requirements directly with PayPal for your circumstances.

Make the website ready for real customers

Even before payment integration, your site should answer basic commercial questions. What is being sold? Who is the seller? How is the service delivered? How can a customer get help? Do the checkout and policies reflect the offer?

  • Describe products or services in plain language.
  • Show prices or explain how a quote is obtained.
  • Provide working contact methods.
  • Explain delivery, cancellation and refund terms where applicable.
  • Make the experience usable on mobile devices.
  • Test the payment flow after the account is approved.

Keep formation, account approval and integration separate

These are three different workstreams. Formation establishes the company; the provider reviews account eligibility; the website connects the approved payment method to the customer journey. Completing one step does not automatically complete the others.

For example, a service business can prepare its quote-request page while its company records are being organized. Once it has an approved payment solution, it can add the appropriate collection process and test confirmation messages, receipts and customer support instructions.
